Chapter Eight – Vegetables or Salad?

On this particular work night, Angelien was feeling really tired. She had been busy with housework all day as well as packing her boys’ suitcases for their visit to Melbourne to visit with their other grandmother. They did this once a year and their grandmother spoilt them rotten for two weeks.

The moment Angelien arrived at the office a call came in from an English gentleman. Within reason, she could typecast the wants of different nationalities, not all of course, just in general. So, when the girls heard it was an Englishman, they all looked at each other and took bets. The one whose guess came closest to what would happen, could pick her choice of which cake she would like and who would cook or buy it.

He requested someone of mature age so it was a given that Angelien should go. The job was in Neutral Bay, which was only a short drive away from the office. Being tired, Angelien had hoped that the job would be short so that she could go home early. She didn’t have any other bookings lined up for the night, so she was happy to call it a night as soon as she was done.

The client lived in an apartment building that fronted Sydney Harbour. Upon arriving, Angelien was very impressed and thought that he much be fairly well off. She rode the elevator to the 5th floor, and noted that there were only two apartments per floor with thick carpet and opulent lightening decorating the hallway.

She didn’t even have time to knock on the door before it opened with a flourish and a very distinguished, beautiful looking man was standing in front of her.

Before the smile had even managed to form on her face in hello, he yelled, “You’re late!”

No greeting, no welcoming smile, just an abrasive holler.

He spun on his heel and walked down the hallway, disappearing to the left, leaving Angelien standing in the hallway at the open door.

Stunned for a moment, Angelien had no choice but to laugh quietly to herself as she realised this was going to be interesting, or at the very least, different from her usual bookings. She stepped through the doorway and closed the door behind her, following in the direction she had seen him go.

Angelien found him standing near the refrigerator with his hands on his hips and an aggravated expression on his face.

“It’s about time you had the sense to come in,” he sneered.

“Inside you will find some vegetables that I bought this morning. Pick out two or three and put them on the bench. I’ll be back in a minute.” With that he walked promptly out of the room and disappeared from sight.

You may think that Angelien was a little ignorant here, but she really thought, that he was getting her to select ingredients for a meal. As she leaned her head down to peer inside the fridge she saw carrots, cucumbers, zucchinis, bananas, parsnips. This was all
